The Do's and Don'ts of Appellate Advocacy

The main topics to be discussed include: When does an appeal makes sense? How should the parties formulate a strategies for an appeal? Does the Illinois Appellate Court have jurisdiction for the appeal?  How should you preserve the best record on Appeal?  What are some strategies for preparing the necessary parts of the appellate briefs and appendix?  If granted an oral argument, how should one prepare?  What are some effective ways to orally argue before the panel?  

We will have an all-star panel of Illinois Appellate Court justices joining us for the evening:

Justice Mathias W. Delort

Justice Mathias W. Delort is currently an Appellate Court Justice. He has been a judge since 2007. He earned his B.S. in mathematics cum laude from DePaul University and his J.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago Law School. He also holds a master’s degree in public administration (M.P.A.) from the University of Illinois. Before becoming a judge, Justice Delort was a partner and head of the Local Government Practice Group of Robbins, Schwartz, Nicholas, Lifton & Taylor, Ltd. (now known as Robbins Schwartz), specializing in local government and election law.





Justice Aurelia M. Pucinski

Justice Aurelia M. Pucinski was elected to the Illinois Appellate Court, 1st District, in 2010. She served as a Circuit Court judge in Cook County from 2004 to 2010. She served as the Clerk of the Court of Cook County from 1988 to 2000. Justice Pucinski earned her J.D. from DePaul College of Law.   




Justice Mary L. Mikva

Justice Mary L. Mikva began serving as a justice on the Illinois First District Appellate Court in 2016. Before that, she was a judge in the CIrcuit Court of Cook County from 2004 to 2016. Justice Mikva received her J.D. from Northwestern University. Prior to her time on the bench, Justice Mkva was a partner at the law firms of Abrahamson Vorachek & Mikva and also Seliger & Mikva. She was a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. and U.S. District Judge Prentice Marshall).




Justice Jesse G. Reyes

Justice Jesse G. Reyes received his B.A. degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and his J.D. degree from the John Marshall Law School (UIC). He has been a member of the judiciary since December, 1997, serving both as an associate and elected judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Judge Reyes was elected to the Appellate Court in November, 2012.

Attorney Alon Stein

The moderator, Alon Stein is a trial and appellate attorney at Stein Law Offices. He has recently argued before the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and the Illinois Appellate Court (Second and Third Districts).
